Chapter 24

After they dealt with the police report, quickly determining the license plate on the SUV had been reported stolen the day before, Leo and the bodyguards headed back to Gunnar and Åse’s estate. Leo assured them he was staying in for the rest of the day and would not need their assistance anymore for now, so he left them standing by the car.

He stalked through the front door, having at last succeeded in calming down his shudders. No one was in the front part of the house, so he headed down the hall to the study. Without preamble he burst in on Gunnar, who was frowning slightly at his laptop and typing at top speed. Gunnar was clearly in what Åse referred to as his “deep writing mode.”

Leo demanded, “Gun-Man! Where’s Sibley?”

Popping his head up, Gunnar blinked and shook his head slightly as if clearing his vision and asked, “Why are you back so soon, Leo?”

“Long story. Where’s Sibley?” he repeated.

“Um…” Gunnar frowned again as if trying to remember. “They mentioned wanting some exercise after eating such a big breakfast, so I think they either went for a swim or they’re working out downstairs. I wasn’t really paying attention. Sorry… I just had this brainstorm, see… about…” Gunnar’s voice trailed off because he was speaking to no one. Leo disappeared as quickly as he’d arrived. Gunnar went back to work as if nothing had happened.

Leo strode purposefully down the stairs and finally was able to hear the two women talking—their voices coming from the well-appointed gym on the lower level of the house. He burst through the door and found Åse riding the stationary bike while Sibley was using the abdominal exercise machine. Leo had a love-hate relationship with that particular piece of equipment and knew how hard it was to make yourself keep going. But Sibley was doing it. He almost wanted to stop and admire her efforts, but he had a different purpose in mind.

“Leo!” Sibley exclaimed breathlessly as she looked up and saw him prowling toward her. “Why are you back so soon? I thought you would be gone for most of the day.” She finally stopped her crunches to look at him.

“I missed you. Come with me.”

Sibley stared at him for a second too long, so he gently but firmly took her by the arm and pulled. “Now, Sibley. I need you.”

Åse recognized the unmistakable look of hunger in Leo’s eyes and snorted. “Better go, Sibley. Have fun!” She’d seen that look on Gunnar’s face plenty of times.

“I’m all sweaty, Leo,” Sibley protested as Leo propelled her down the hall to their bedroom. “Is everything alright? Can I take a shower at least?” She turned to Leo and saw that he was yanking at his shirt as they hurried along.

“Shower later,” he said with a muffled voice as he pulled the shirt over his head.

They made it to the bedroom, and he shut the door firmly and locked it. Then he dragged a somewhat astonished Sibley toward the bed.
